Chapter 8

On Friday, Mica followed Cowboy and Chase’s SUV down State Highway 191, heading northeast toward Glasgow and Fort Peck Lake. Mica had made a big show of letting Amy know she could ride with the other two hunters. The men had pretended to be keen on the idea of imparting their vast knowledge while they made the several hours drive, but everyone in the conference room that morning had known she’d wind up sitting next to him in his vehicle. Four inside Cowboy’s SUV would’ve been just a little too cramped—especially when two hunters couldn’t keep their hands to themselves.

Over the past few days, they’d sat as close as two bodies on two chairs could ever sit since they’d done their best to fuck away their attraction. It hadn’t worked. And no one had been fooled.

The first morning after they’d both arrived late, Amy had been chagrined to realize that no amount of makeup would hide the redness of the whisker burn she’d sported on her neck. Only Fig had had the bad manners to mention it, offering the use of some aloe cream she said was perfect for whisker burns.

The men around the table had had the good grace to bite their lips and aim their gazes elsewhere, looking near to tears as they’d fought to control their laughter.

Amy had sent Mica a glare, then had plopped down in the seat next to him. “What would be the point?” she’d whispered.

They’d brazened out the rest of the week, picking up local skips, spending time at the range, dinners at local establishments, and evenings in Amy’s bed since his motel room wasn’t nearly as spacious.

“Glad to be on the road?” he asked, not looking away from the highway.

“I wish I was going into the woods with you guys, but Cage said Brian Cobb’s a great trainer, so yeah, I’m happy to be away from the office.”

No simple “yes” for his girl. Mica smiled. “You’re doing great with the drone. Chase said you’re a natural.”

“I’ve played video games since middle school. Flying a drone is easy, especially when you’re not dodging missiles or dragons. I’m just glad Fig let me pack the one I’ve been training on.”

“Brian has rooms already reserved for us in Glasgow.”

“Rooms?” she asked, a hint of a smile in her voice.

“I told him we’d only need one. Did I overstep?”

“Naw, why have the agency waste the money when we’ll wind up using the same bed anyway?” Her hand slid onto his thigh, and Mica cleared his throat. “We still have two hours to get there.”

“We’re sitting up high in here,” she said, her tone teasing. “Unless you pass a semi, no one’s gonna know.”

“Holy shit,” he said under his breath as she began to trail her fingers along the length of his shaft, which was currently trapped in his jeans on the side of his right leg.

“Maybe you should pull him free before he gets strangled in there.”

“Maybe I should just pay attention to the road,” he muttered.
